“At first, everyone was a little bit confused by it. But when you think about it, it makes so much sense. Fortune cookies, the advertising you see on them, and what you get from the fortune itself, provides a longer lasting impression than other advertising methods."
- Izzy Sarrafzadeh
Brand Manager at Dr. Squatch
Dr. Squatch. This direct-to-consumer men's personal care brand has been shaking up the industry since 2013 with their all-natural, eco-friendly products and tongue-in-cheek marketing.
Their mission? To inspire and educate men to be happier and healthier through high-quality personal care products. We're talking soaps, deodorants, shampoos, and more - all crafted with natural ingredients and a generous dollop of humor.
Picture this: you're a brand like Dr. Squatch, known for your comedic, outside-the-box marketing. You've done it all - hilarious viral videos, cheeky social posts, the works. But now you're looking for something truly unique. Something that'll make people stop and say, "Of course Dr. Squatch would do this."
As if the universe itself had slipped a message into the CEO's fortune cookie, he declared to his team, "We need a Fortune-cookie-esque approach to our marketing!"
Lo and behold, that very same day, OpenFortune came knocking with their innovative idea of turning fortune cookies into an advertising platform. Coincidence? Or destiny?
OpenFortune pitched their concept, and it immediately clicked with the Dr. Squatch team. After all, what's more unexpected than finding an ad for men’s personal care products in your post-meal prophecy? The team worked closely with OpenFortune to craft fortunes that perfectly encapsulated the Dr. Squatch brand - a dash of humor, a pinch of sarcasm, and a heaping spoonful of memorable messaging.
The front slip featured witty fortunes about getting down & dirty, needing a shower, and other cheeky messages aligned with Dr. Squatch's brand voice. The back slip showcased simple creative with product imagery and the Dr. Squatch logo.
From there, OpenFortune strategically distributed custom fortune cookies to restaurants frequented by Dr. Squatch's target audience.
Plus, according to Dr. Squatch Brand Manager, Izzy Sarrafzadeh the cookies themselves were surprisingly delicious - with our signature hint of vanilla in there. Dangerous stuff.
“The OpenFortune team was great to work with, and the process was seamless. Their strong understanding of our brand and past success with other brands made it easy to translate into the fortune copy and creative.”
Folks were caught off guard in the best way possible, finding an ad in a place they least expected it and social media lit up with reactions to the Dr. Squatch fortunes. And because they were in that fortune-cookie-reading mindset, the message really stuck with them - way more than your average billboard or sidewalk ad.

“Connecting with consumers at this point in time has a much longer-lasting impact compared to just having an out-of-home billboard somewhere in the city or on the sidewalk. People tend to put their trust in a fortune, so there's a stronger emotional tie to it."
